Project Brief and Site Challenges
As part of a backyard improvement project, the homeowner sought a practical and attractive solution for an area adjacent to their swimming pool that had become difficult to use.
The existing space regularly experienced water pooling, creating muddy conditions and limiting usability throughout the year. The area was also lower than the surrounding landscape, resulting in a step down that created a potential safety concern when accessing the pool area.
While drainage was the most visible issue, a detailed site assessment identified a broader challenge. Water was not only entering the area through rainfall but was also flowing into the space from surrounding sections of the property and nearby road levels.
The client wanted a long-term solution that would improve drainage, enhance safety and provide a durable outdoor area for children and pets. Sustainability was also a priority, with a specific requirement for a PFAS free and latex free artificial turf product.

The area was excavated, raised and regraded to improve surface levels and reduce the amount of water entering the site. Careful consideration was given to how water moved across the property, ensuring the finished levels would support effective drainage and long-term durability.
Provision was also made for the installation of a channel drain system that will collect and redirect water around the home and away from the pool area. This proactive approach helps manage both surface water and runoff from surrounding areas, reducing the risk of future pooling and saturation.
To ensure a cohesive finish, Ecovia Turf worked closely with the homeowner to coordinate surrounding garden bed levels and landscape features. This attention to detail created a smooth transition between the turf, pool area and adjoining gardens.
The project was completed using 100m² of EcoAbode 30mm artificial turf. Selected for its durability, drainage performance and sustainability credentials, EcoAbode is PFAS free, latex free and backed by a 15 year warranty, providing long-term confidence and performance for the homeowner.
